Understand the overlapping metal pieces at roof-to-wall joints, the role of kick-out flashing, and what should appear in the scope.
A dormer, chimney or taller wall creates a roof transition worth discussing before work starts. Ask for a roof overview that identifies every wall intersection, not just the most visible one.
Understand the detail
Step flashing uses individual bent metal pieces interwoven with shingle courses. The wall drainage layer must direct water onto the flashing. At the lower end, kick-out flashing diverts runoff away from the wall. A surface bead of sealant is not the same assembly.

Three steps for a clearer roof inspection
Map the intersections. Include dormers, sidewalls and chimney sides in the discussion.
Confirm access. Ask whether siding or other finishes must be removed to do the work.
Request progress photos. The important overlaps may be concealed when the wall finish is restored.
Can you judge flashing from the finished roof photo?
Only partly. Ask for installation-stage photographs and a written explanation of the wall connection. A neat-looking outer trim piece does not reveal every layer behind it.
