Identify plumbing vent flashing, compare collar repair with full replacement, and learn what useful before-and-after photos should show.
The pipe sticking through a shingle roof needs its own flashing detail. If a proposal simply says “seal vents,” ask which openings are involved and what repair is actually planned.
Understand the detail
Choose flashing for the pipe diameter, roof pitch and roof covering. For a shingle roof, the base is integrated with the surrounding shingle courses so runoff stays outside. A replacement rain collar can address a failed collar only when the underlying flashing remains suitable. Metal-roof boots use a different installation detail.
Follow the water path: shingles cover the uphill side of the flashing, while its lower edge remains exposed. Three steps for a clearer roof inspection
Name the penetration. A plumbing vent, appliance flue and attic exhaust are different components.
Compare the scope. Ask whether the price covers a collar, complete flashing, surrounding shingles or deck repairs.
Save the matching photos. Use the same viewpoint before and after so the improvement is easy to recognize.
Is more sealant always the answer?
Ask what is causing the leak and which product detail supports the repair. A proposal should identify the repair method rather than rely on a vague promise to apply more sealant.
