GAF’s illustration shows the difference between a cracked sample and a passing sample. UL 2218 Class 4 testing uses a 2-inch steel ball dropped twice from 20 feet under controlled conditions.
Real hail varies. Class 4 does not mean hail-proof, and GAF’s limited warranties do not cover hail damage.
What SBS adds
SBS modifies the asphalt for flexibility and resistance to cracking. Ask for the exact AS II product in your quote, not simply “GAF architectural shingles.”
