Learn the difference between sideways offset and exposed shingle height, with a simple diagram and questions for your installation.
Two measurements describe a shingle layout: how far the next row shifts sideways and how much shingle remains visible below it. They are different measurements, even when the finished pattern looks simple.
Understand the detail
For the July 2026 Duration instructions, the illustrated layout uses a 6½-inch offset and 5⅝-inch exposure. The document allows specified alternatives and sets joint-to-fastener limits. These measurements apply to that product, not automatically to another shingle or Duration FLEX.

Three steps for a clearer roof inspection
Ask which layout applies. Have the crew identify the instructions for the exact shingle.
Use an overview and a detail. One shows row alignment; the other explains the measurements.
Keep appearance and installation separate. A color pattern alone cannot verify the concealed overlaps or fasteners.
Can the crew use the same spacing on every brand?
Ask them to check the selected product instructions. If a substitution is proposed, request confirmation of the layout and accessory changes before installation.
