How a qualifying GAF roof system combines 50-year non-prorated protection with 15-year WindProven coverage, plus installation and registration requirements.
Two protections. One carefully specified roof.
50 years: System Plus non-prorated manufacturing-defect coverage on eligible Lifetime shingle systems.
15 years: WindProven limited wind coverage for eligible LayerLock shingles, with no maximum wind-speed limit.
For a Barnes N’ Roofs replacement specified with these warranties, the product combination, installation and registration all matter. Confirm both warranties in your written estimate.
Build the complete GAF system
WindProven eligibility calls for LayerLock-labeled shingles plus four qualifying GAF accessory categories:
Starter strips at the roof edges.
Roof deck protection beneath the shingles.
Ridge cap shingles to finish hips and ridges.
Leak barrier or attic ventilation as the fourth qualifying category.
Use qualifying products and follow their current application instructions. The required combination belongs in the scope before work starts.
Installation details matter
Deck and ventilation: review the roof’s condition and address the requirements for the selected system.
Fastening and sealing: follow the specific shingle instructions, including nail placement and sealing requirements.
Flashing and transitions: include the details around walls, valleys and penetrations in the written scope.

What the 50-year protection means
System Plus extends the Smart Choice protection period to 50 years for eligible Lifetime shingles. Covered manufacturing defects can include replacement materials, installation labor and necessary tear-off and disposal, subject to GAF’s terms.
It is not a 50-year workmanship warranty. Lifetime coverage applies to qualifying shingles and accessories on single-family detached homes owned by individuals. Other properties and owners have different terms. Lifetime is tied to ownership, not a promise that the roof lasts forever.
Finish with registration
Specify System Plus and the qualifying products in the agreement.
Complete eligibility requirements. GAF requires registration and full payment to the contractor.
Keep the confirmation. The contractor must register within 45 days of installation. If GAF’s confirmation has not arrived within 60 days, contact GAF.
Know the limits before a storm
WindProven covers eligible shingles, not every part of the roof. No wind-speed ceiling does not mean storm-proof. Hail, flying debris, improper installation and other exclusions still apply.
Metal, tile, repairs and low-slope membrane roofs do not automatically qualify for these GAF shingle warranties. Your project agreement identifies the coverage being provided.
