A roof estimate should name the starter material as well as the visible shingles. Ask for a progress photo at the perimeter before the first finished courses hide this layer.
Understand the detail
Purpose-made starter shingles provide an edge detail beneath the first visible shingles. Product compatibility, sealant position, fasteners and joint layout matter. Owens Corning publishes separate starter instructions; do not assume that turning a field shingle upside down produces the specified starter assembly.

Match the products. List the field shingle and starter by name on the same estimate.
Identify the perimeter. Use an overview to mark where the starter is planned.
Check the documentation. Keep the product information and installation photographs together.
Will I see the starter on the finished roof?
Usually the useful evidence is a progress photograph. Ask for one while the crew is working instead of expecting a finished beauty shot to show every concealed layer.
